Sharing the Sermon on the Mount from Memory (18:07):
I had the privilege of preaching through the Sermon on the Mount at Plantation Community Church during the months of February through September 2015. (You can find all the messages here: https://www.rayfowler.org/sermons/sermon-on-the-mount/) At the end of the series we took an additional Sunday to hear the Sermon on the Mount from beginning to end as recorded in Matthew 5-7. Here are the remarks I shared with the congregation before sharing the actual sermon:
————————————————
This is the time of the service when I usually ask you to open your Bibles to a certain Scripture passage. But for once I’m going to ask you not to open your Bibles. If you have them, you can put them away. We’re going to do something a little different today.
We’ve spent the last six months on Sunday mornings studying the Sermon on the Mount together. We have studied each individual section in depth and in detail. And it’s good to study Scripture closely, but sometimes miss we can miss the forest for the trees.
And so I thought it would be good for us to take a Sunday at the end of the series, and for you to hear the Sermon on the Mount as a whole. I first thought about reading it out loud, but I didn’t want to just read the words to you. I thought about preaching it, but there is only one person who can actually preach the Sermon on the Mount, and that’s Jesus. They are his words, and no one else can preach them as their own.
Instead I want to speak the Sermon to you this morning. The first hearers on the mountainside actually heard Jesus speak these words to them, and I want to replicate that experience for us as best as possible this morning. So I’ve done my best to memorize Jesus’ words for you, so I can speak them to you directly without any pulpit or paper intervening. As much as possible I want you to imagine what it would have been like to be there, to be sitting on that mountainside and hearing Jesus speak these amazing words for the first time.
So, let us now hear the Word of God as recorded for us in Matthew chapters 5-7: Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.
