Each Christmas we celebrate Jesus coming into the world as a baby. That God would become man is such an amazing thought, it deserves our full attention. That God did become man is such an amazing miracle, it deserves our wonder and praise.

But sometimes we are so focused on the baby in the manger, we forget why Jesus came into the world. Ultimately, Jesus came to die on the cross for our sins, but there are many other reasons connected with that which you will find in Scripture.

Here is a list of ten reasons why Jesus came at Christmas, many of them straight from Jesus’ own lips, followed by two quick applications.

1. Jesus came to do the will of the Father (John 6:38)
“For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.”

2. Jesus came to seek and to save the lost (Luke 19:10)
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”

3. Jesus came to save sinners (1 Timothy 1:15)
“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.”

4. Jesus came not to call the righteous, but sinners (Luke 5:31-32)
Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

5. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8)
“He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.”

6. Jesus came to kill death (Hebrews 2:14-15)
“Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.”

7. Jesus came to bring light to a dark world (John 12:46)
“I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”

8. Jesus came to bear witness to the truth (John 18:37)
“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

9. Jesus came to fulfill the law and the prophets (Matt 5:17)
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

10. Jesus came to give us abundant life (John 10:10)
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Two Applications:
1) Thank God for sending his Son at Christmas.
2) Tell others why Jesus came.
