Sunday’s message in The Greatest Chapter in the Bible series was called Children of God and Heirs with Christ, taken from Romans 8:12-17. Here is a brief outline of the message:
I. You have a new obligation (12-14)
A. You have no obligation to the sinful nature (12)
– Romans 6:20-21
B. You are called to put sinful deeds to death by the Spirit (13)
– Colossians 3:5
C. You are called to follow the Spirit (14)
– Galatians 5:16
II. You have a new family (15-16)
A. You did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear (15a)
– Hebrews 2:14-15; 1 John 4:18
B. You received the Spirit of sonship and call on God as your Father (15b)
– Matthew 6:9; Mark 14:36
C. God’s Spirit testifies with your spirit that you are God’s child (16)
– Galatians 4:6
III. You have a new future (17)
A. You are an heir of God and co-heir with Christ (17a)
– Galatians 4:7; Ephesians 1:13-14; Hebrews 1:2
B. You share in Christ’s sufferings that you may also share in his glory (17b)
– Matthew 5:11-12; 1 Peter 1:6-7
