Sunday’s message from the Lead Me to the Cross series was called At the Cross, taken from Matthew 27:32-46. Here is a brief outline of the message:
I. Jesus bore the full pain of the cross (32-34)
– physical suffering
A. He used up all his strength (32)
B. He refused to dull the pain (33-34)
II. Jesus bore the full shame of the cross (35-38)
– emotional suffering
A. They took his clothing (35-36)
B. They mocked his true identity (37)
C. They crucified him between two thieves (38)
III. Jesus bore the full insult of the cross (39-44)
– relational suffering
A. Those who passed by hurled insults at him (39-40)
B. The religious leaders mocked him (41-43)
C. Even the thieves heaped insults on him (44)
IV. Jesus bore the full penalty for sin at the cross (45-46)
– spiritual suffering
A. He was forsaken by God
B. He paid the full price for all our sins (Isaiah 53:4-6)
“The greatest suffering occurred at the cross because the greatest price was paid at the cross.”
