On Pastor Burnout (Briscoe)

From the Christian Post:

“I have a theory why so many pastors burn out: They start out walking with Jesus but they end up working for Jesus.”

(Pete Briscoe of Bent Tree Bible Fellowship in Carrolton, Texas, recalled hearing from someone at a time when he was depressed)

Update: I found a similar saying in Oswald Chambers’ devotional My Utmost for His Highest:

“From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more” (John 6:66 ). They turned back from walking with Jesus; not into sin, but away from Him. Many people today are pouring their lives out and working for Jesus Christ, but are not really walking with Him. (Chambers; Devotional for March 9)

Greetings my Fellow Pastors, I have a theory and some thoughts for consideration for those who become burnout. have we considered the possibility from Jeremiah 10:19-23? Have we considered that we missed the simpleness of Christ’s Ministry and missed the attributes or the characteristics that Christ taught us by example as far as kindness, compassion, mercy, love, non-judging, non-condemning? The world and the people in this world live under the delusions that have been sent; therefore we might want to question what we are preaching and how we are preaching the word for the times we live in. If our ways don’t align with what Christ demonstrated, then how can we say that we are truly walking in his ways? The delusions deal with the mystery of iniquity and unless we understand that (2 Thessalonians 2:7-12) along with Isaiah 66:4 and also in the Book of Matthew 15:6-9. Dr. Clarence Sexton preached a message on why Israel fell and it was a direct result of Pastors missing the mark. We should take heed because Christs coming is not far off, (I give it about 10 years) and if you don’t believe that then you should re-consider what you are truly doing. I am not saying this to condemn or criticize, but an avenue that needs to be considered. Our churches are on a decline, maybe we need to consider all this from a spiritual aspect as Christ did. God Bless my Brothers. -Minister David Webb
