Doing Church Together | Lou Kochanek

Yesterday’s message was the fourth in the Doing Church Together series from the book of 1 Timothy. The message was called, Going to God through Jesus, taken from 1 Timothy 2:1-7.

1 Timothy 2:1-7 – 1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone — 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men — the testimony given in its proper time. 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle — I am telling the truth, I am not lying — and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles. (NIV)

The main idea of the message was that we may only go to God through his Son, Jesus Christ. Here is a brief recap of the message:

You can only go to God through Jesus Christ. This has important implications for prayer, salvation and Christian witness. Paul explores all three of these areas with Timothy in today’s verses.

1) Prayer must be a priority. (verses 1-4)
    – We are called to pray for all men.
    – We are particularly called to pray for those in authority.
    – Prayer paves the way for people’s savlation.

2) You can only go to God through Jesus. (verses 5-6)
    – There is only one God.
    – There is only one mediator between God and men.
    – Jesus gave himself as a ransom for all men.

3) We must testify about Jesus to others. (verse 7)
    – Paul was appointed as a herald, an apostle and a teacher.
    – We are called to be witnesses for Christ.

Never substitute anything for Jesus Christ. Nothing can replace him. No one else can bring you to God. No amount of good works will suffice; no other religion will work; no other person or thing can bridge the gap. When you go to God in prayer, go to him through Jesus. When you come to God for salvation, come to him through Jesus. When you talk to other people, tell them about Jesus. There is only one God. There is only one mediator between God and men. We must testify about Jesus to others so that they also may come to God through Jesus Christ.
