I. We rest because God designed us to rest
   A. God rested after creation (Genesis 2:2-3; Isaiah 40:28)
   B. God gave us the Sabbath (Exodus 20:8-11; Mark 2:27)
   C. Jesus needed rest (Mark 4:38; John 4:6)
   D. Jesus’ disciples needed rest (Mark 6:30-31)

II. We rest to enjoy God’s good gifts (1 Timothy 4:4-5, 6:17)
   A. Enjoy food, family and friends (Eccl. 3:13, 9:7-9; Neh 8:10)
   B. Enjoy the blessing of play (Zechariah 8:5)
   C. Value physical recreation (1 Timothy 4:8)
   D. Take time to laugh (Proverbs 17:22; 1 Timothy 6:17)

III. We rest because we trust God
   A. We trust God’s provision (Psalm 23:1-3, 127:2; Matt. 6:25)
   B. We trust God’s protection (Psalm 4:8; Proverbs 3:24)
   C. We trust God’s salvation (Matt. 11:28-29; Hebrews 4:9-10)

II. Service – Know who your REAL boss is

III. Witness – How you work matters
   A. Work hard (Proverbs 14:23; Ecclesiastes 9:10)
   B. Work with integrity (Colossians 3:22-24)

I. Watch out for those who would draw your attention away from Christ (1-3)
   A. Rejoice in the Lord
   B. Watch out for false teachers
   C. Hold on to your identity in Christ

II. Put your confidence in Christ, not in yourself (4-7)
   A. Do not put confidence in your background
   B. Do not put confidence in your achievements
   C. Count these things as loss for the sake of Christ

III. Make knowing Christ the supreme desire of your life (8-11)
   A. Consider everything a loss compared to knowing Christ
   B. Be found in Christ having the righteousness that comes by faith
   C. Become like Christ in his death and resurrection

Yesterday’s message in the Philippians: Partners in the Gospel series was called Advancing the Gospel, taken from Philippians 1:12-18. Here is a brief outline of the message:

I. Nothing is more important than advancing the gospel
    A. Advancing the gospel was more important to Paul than his own freedom (12-14)
        1) Paul’s imprisonment allowed him to share the gospel with the whole palace guard (13)
        2) Paul’s imprisonment encouraged other believers to share the gospel more boldly (14)

    B. Advancing the gospel was more important to Paul than his own comfort (15-18)
        1) Not everyone shared Christ from pure motives (15)
        2) Some tried to stir up trouble for Paul in prison (16-17)
        3) Either way, Paul rejoiced that Christ was preached! (18)

II. Nothing can stop the gospel from advancing
    A. God wants to use your present life circumstances as a platform to advance the gospel
    B. The gospel is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes (Romans 1:16)
