Matthew Henry’s Thanksgiving Testimony

Bible commentator Matthew Henry made the following entry in his journal the night he was robbed. This is a great example of “giving thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

“Let me be thankful first because I was never robbed before; second, because although they took my purse, they did not take my life; third, because although they took my all, it was not much; and fourth, because it was I who was robbed, not I who robbed.” (Matthew Henry)

What an incredible view of optimism, living life in the Spirit, when Satan buffets us or the world or our own sinful flesh, we are not subject to these things for Christ has put all this under His feet. Instead we live in another reality, the reality that comes through the Cross where the One Just Man, Jesus, dies an unjust death to undo the justice of God’s Holy wrath that is due to us all, taking on the sins of the world to become sin for us. Now in light of the Cross we can see that every ill that comes our way can not overcome the blessed reality of being God’s child and as His child, receiving all the blessings and benefits of being an heir to our King. Though life should slay me, yet in Christ I am blessed. Thanks be to God who sent His Son to save me!

Yes, I also find this journal entry from Matthew Henry inspiring. When we can view our circumstances through Christ, it makes all the difference. Thanks for sharing!
