Lewis) #47 Wise Blood (novel by Flannery O'Connor) Of course, many of them are based on The Book (the Bible), but I don't think that is what you were asking. :-) I count seven that were based on books already written before the movie was made:

I haven't seen most of these. I especially like movies that are based on books; even so, many movies based on books can be disappointing in that they rarely measure up to the original story that was in book form.
